In the intricate landscape of mental health, the journey to wellness is often a winding road. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Zak Williams, son of the late Robin Williams, who has been on a mission to destigmatize mental health and provide comprehensive solutions for those struggling.

Zak’s journey began with the realization that his lifestyle was not conducive to building resilience. He was not eating healthily, exercising regularly, or practicing mindfulness. However, with the help of his wife, Olivia June, he began to change his habits. 

Olivia had a traumatic experience in her teens when her sister died by suicide. She spent over two decades establishing a path to healing, grounded in nutrition, fitness, and mindfulness. Zak adopted these practices and found them transformative.

Zak’s daily routine now includes a gratitude ritual, where he lists four things he’s grateful for each morning. This simple act helps to generate happiness and diminish the anxieties of day-to-day life. He also practices meditation, which he believes can fundamentally reconfigure our minds and lead to positive outcomes for our bodies.

In addition to these practices, Zak also found therapy helpful. However, he acknowledges that finding the right therapist can be challenging. He believes that there is a massive opportunity to match people with therapists who have lived similar experiences, which could make therapy more effective for many people.

Zak also emphasizes the importance of community support. 

He is active in 12-step programs and believes that lived experience and vulnerability can help draw people in and engage them in meaningful dialogue.

Zak’s journey led him to co-found PYM (Prepare Your Mind), a company that aims to make nutrition for mental well-being a household thing. PYM offers products like mood chews, which are designed to support stress and overwhelm, and attention chews, which help with distraction and energy.

In the future, Zak is excited about the potential of AI and machine learning in the realm of mental health. He believes that these technologies could be used to analyze lifestyle data and biomarkers, leading to more efficient diagnoses and treatment pathways.
